At Elmdale IT Services, we have always believed that great IT support is built on great people. Technology moves quickly, but the values behind good service remain the same: curiosity, communication, patience, problem-solving and a real desire to help.
That is why apprenticeships matter to us.
Apprentices bring fresh energy, new ideas and a willingness to learn. In return, we give them real-world experience, proper mentoring and the opportunity to build a career in an industry that is constantly growing. For us, apprentices are not just “extra help” in the business. They are part of our future.
Our partnership with West Berkshire Training
A big part of our apprenticeship journey has been the support and guidance we have received from West Berkshire Training Consortium.
Their apprenticeship programmes are designed to combine real workplace experience with structured training, helping apprentices develop the skills, knowledge and behaviours needed to succeed in their chosen career. Their approach has helped guide the way we support apprentices at Elmdale, giving us a clear structure for training, development, mentoring and progression.
Working with West Berkshire Training has helped us shape apprenticeships around real business needs, not just classroom learning. That is important in IT, because every day is different. One day an apprentice may be learning about Microsoft 365, the next they may be helping with support tickets, cyber security awareness, documentation, networking or client communication.
The partnership has helped us move forward with confidence, making sure our apprentices are supported properly while also gaining meaningful experience that benefits both them and the business.
Giving apprentices real IT experience
The IT sector can be hard to break into. There is a big difference between learning theory and dealing with real client environments, live support tickets, cyber security concerns, Microsoft 365 issues, networking problems and user support.
At Elmdale, apprentices get to see how IT works in the real world. They learn how to support businesses and schools, how to communicate with users, how to troubleshoot properly and how to understand the wider impact technology has on an organisation.
This helps them build confidence, not just technical knowledge.
Why apprentices make a difference to Elmdale
Apprentices help us grow as a business. They bring enthusiasm, fresh thinking and a different way of looking at problems. Sometimes someone new to the industry asks the simplest question — and that question makes everyone stop and think.
They also help us build a stronger team. By training apprentices, our senior engineers and consultants become better mentors, better communicators and better leaders. It creates a culture where knowledge is shared rather than kept in silos.
That makes the whole business stronger.
Supporting the next generation of IT professionals
As an IT managed services provider, we have a responsibility to help develop the next generation of technical talent. Businesses and schools need skilled IT people more than ever, especially as cyber security, cloud services, compliance and digital transformation become increasingly important.
By investing in apprentices, we are helping to close the skills gap and giving young people a real opportunity to build a long-term career.
For us, that is something to be proud of.
Helping apprentices move up the chain
At Elmdale, we do not see apprenticeships as temporary placements. We see them as the start of a career.
Our aim is always to keep the apprentices we train wherever possible and help them continue moving up through the business. We want apprentices to grow from learning the basics on the helpdesk into confident first-line engineers, then into more advanced technical, project, consultancy or leadership roles.
That progression matters. It gives apprentices something to aim for, and it gives Elmdale a stronger, more loyal and more capable team. When someone has grown inside the business, they understand our clients, our systems, our standards and our way of working.
It also creates a positive culture. New apprentices can see that others have joined, learned, progressed and built proper careers with us. That makes the pathway feel real.
Learning the Elmdale way
We want our apprentices to understand more than just the technical side of IT. We want them to learn the importance of good customer service, clear communication, professional standards and doing the right thing for the client.
Our apprentices get to work alongside experienced engineers, helpdesk staff, project teams and consultants. They learn how to investigate issues, document work properly, protect client confidentiality and deliver support in a calm, professional way.
These are the skills that turn someone from “good with computers” into a trusted IT professional.
A positive impact on our clients
Our clients benefit too. Apprentices help us increase capacity, improve response times and build a team that can support clients now and in the future.
When apprentices are trained properly, they become confident, capable and valuable members of the service desk and wider technical team. They learn our clients’ systems, understand our standards and grow with the business.
That continuity is important. It helps us deliver a more personal and reliable service.
Building careers, not just filling roles
At Elmdale, we do not see apprenticeships as a short-term fix. We see them as a long-term investment.
The aim is to help apprentices develop into skilled engineers, consultants, project specialists or future leaders within the business. Everyone has to start somewhere, and with the right support, guidance and opportunities, an apprentice can become a key part of the company’s success.
Apprenticeships are good for young people, good for business and good for the IT industry.
At Elmdale IT Services, we are proud to support apprentices as they develop their skills, confidence and career path. With the guidance of West Berkshire Training and the support of our internal team, we are building a pathway that helps people learn, progress and thrive.
Because when we help apprentices thrive, everyone benefits.
