Tech Tips Tuesday: Why Backups Need Testing

Tech Tips Tuesday: laptop shows “Backup restore test successful”—why testing data backups matters for business.

Most businesses know they need backups.

But having a backup is only half the job.

The real question is: Can you restore from it when you need to?

If you have never tested your backups, you do not really know if they work.

A backup is only useful if it can be restored

Backups can fail for many reasons.

Storage may be full. Jobs may stop running. Files may be skipped. Permissions may be wrong. Cloud backups may not include everything you thought they did. Servers may back up successfully but fail during recovery.

The danger is that everything can look fine until the day you urgently need your data back.

What could go wrong?

Untested backups can lead to serious problems, including lost files, extended downtime, lost income, compliance issues, customer disruption, reputational damage, and expensive recovery work.

In a ransomware attack, a good backup may be the difference between a controlled recovery and a business crisis.

Testing gives confidence

Backup testing proves that your data can be restored.

It helps answer important questions. Are the backups running? Are they backing up the right data? Can individual files be restored? Can full systems be recovered? How long would recovery take? Who is responsible for the restore process? Are alerts being monitored?

Different types of restore tests

A backup test does not always need to mean restoring an entire server.

It could include restoring a sample file, restoring an email, recovering a SharePoint document, testing a virtual machine restore, checking backup reports, confirming off-site backup availability, and documenting the recovery process.

Steve’s tip

Do not just ask, “Do we have backups?”

Ask, “When did we last test a restore?”

That is the question that really matters.

Final thought

Backups are not something to set and forget. They need monitoring, testing, and reviewing.

A backup strategy should be part of a wider disaster recovery and business continuity plan.
